Air Jordan: When Assouline Compiles how Sneakers Turn Into Legacy... and the man behind them

Every sneakerhead knows the Jumpman isn’t just a logo, it’s a symbol. A cultural fulcrum. With its new Air Jordan book, Assouline does more than chronicle 40 years of sneaker history -it elevates it. This isn’t a coffee-table book. It’s a manifesto of influence, designed with reverence, insight, and creative ambition.

At ComplexCon we had the privilege of checking out a stand done in collaboration between the Nike DNA team and Assouline. We knew we were in for something special, but all expectations were exceeded. Here's why:

Launched in collaboration with Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand, the book marks four decades since the first Air Jordan changed the way the world saw basketball shoes. But, in the words of MJ himself:

“This is not a book about the game of basketball. Instead, it’s a celebration. A celebration of 40 years of greatness.”

Written by Adam Bradley, the volume is structured around six chapters — a nod to Jordan’s six NBA championships. Each chapter weaves together design evolution, business innovation, personal legacy, cultural landmarks, and Jordan’s enduring off-court style. What’s Inside: More Than Just Photographs

The book is rich with rare archival material: sketches from Nike’s internal vaults, personal keepsakes of MJ, unseen photographs, and clothing from pivotal moments in his life. A previously unpublished Annie Leibovitz portrait graces the cover — a striking mirror to the icon’s silhouette.

Interviews and commentary from key figures — including Jordan Brand insiders like Howard “H” White and Larry Miller, as well as cultural voices like Spike Lee, Carmelo Anthony, and Luka Dončić — offer deep context. Through their words, the book reflects not only on a sneaker empire but on a broader legacy that bridges sport, business, and fashion.

Assouline has released Air Jordan in two distinct versions:

  • The Classic Edition (~$123) is elegant and accessible, perfect for those who want tangible history without extravagance.

  • The Ultimate Edition, limited to 1,000 hand-numbered copies, is crafted for collectors: housed in a tooled leather clamshell, it includes an Italian silk scarf (Jumpman-themed) and a base that reveals six gold rings.

We've said it before, and we'll continue to say it: at Noirfonce, we don’t just sell sneakers: we curate stories. This book aligns perfectly with our ethos: design isn’t just about how things look, but how they move through time and culture. Air Jordan by Assouline isn’t simply a book: it’s an archive, a celebration, and a piece of artistry dedicated to a legacy that changed the world.

This is more than a read. It’s a reminder of why the Jumpman still matters — how it shaped design, how it moved culture, and how it continues to define aspiration.
