Carbon plates: the running shoe revolution

With the Vaporfly 4% launched in 2017, Nike transformed road running: pairing ultra-light, responsive foam with a carbon fibre plate kicked off the super shoe era. In Vienna in 2019, Eliud Kipchoge became the first person to run a marathon distance in under two hours, wearing an Alphafly prototype. Since then, carbon plate running shoes have become the benchmark for runners across Europe, from elite athletes to ambitious amateurs.

Sizing and feel: choosing your carbon plate shoe

Start with your usual running shoe size and check the size guide on each product page: race models often fit more snugly than training shoes. The plate stiffens the sole and, combined with highly responsive foam, promotes an efficient toe-off and strong energy return. Models marked W follow women's sizing, and available sizes are shown in real time.

When to run in carbon plate running shoes

Carbon plate running shoes are at their best on the road, racing anything from 10K to the marathon and during fast sessions at threshold or race pace. For easy runs, rotate with a more stable training shoe to vary the load on your legs. The Zoom Fly 6 is a great way into the carbon feel, while the Vaporfly and Alphafly are built for pure race-day performance.
