Nike Mind 002 Flyknit: a sneaker that starts in the head

Most performance footwear is built to make the body do more, through softer foam, stiffer plates or more energy return, but Nike Mind starts from the other end. Announced in October 2025 and released in January 2026, it is Nike's first footwear platform based on neuroscience, developed by the Mind Science Department inside the Nike Sport Research Lab, which studies the nervous system, brain activity and cognition while athletes move. Nike describes it as the result of more than ten years of engineering and manufacturing work.

The idea is that what the foot feels shapes how the brain pays attention. Each Nike Mind sole carries 22 independent foam nodes bonded to a flexible, water-resistant base, and they work like small pistons and gimbals that pass the texture of the ground up into the foot. According to Nike, that stimulation activates key sensory areas of the brain and helps athletes feel calm, focused and present before and after competition. Hundreds of athletes tested the shoes over five years, Erling Haaland among them, and Eric Avar, Nike's creative director for innovation, describes Mind as a concept "that helps reawaken the foot, the body and the mind."

The platform launched in two shapes. The Mind 001 is a mule that slips on and off easily, while the Mind 002 is a laced sneaker that holds the foot against the footbed for more sensation and support. Both sold out on restock after restock through the first half of the year, and the 002 has since taken on a Flyknit upper that Nike's ISPA team developed when the technology was first paired with a full shoe, an upper first seen on Hiroshi Fujiwara's fragment design collaboration.

That Flyknit version is the one we have online now. The knit wraps the foot like a sock, a quick-lace toggle replaces the knot, and the coloured nodes underneath become the main design feature. "Light Bone" pairs warm neutrals with Saturn Gold and Infinite Gold, while "Sanddrift" sets a pale beige knit against nodes in Fossil Rose and Plum Eclipse. It sits somewhere between a recovery shoe and a design object, the pair you reach for after training, on a long travel day or on a slow Sunday, worn with wide wool trousers, washed linen or a tonal tracksuit.
