Air Jordan 9 Retro: the global Jordan, from 1993 to Space Jam

1993: the Air Jordan 9 and MJ's first retirement

Tinker Hatfield designed the Air Jordan 9 for the 1993-94 season. But on 6 October 1993, Michael Jordan announced his first retirement, before the model had even been released. That makes the 9 the only one of the early Air Jordans that MJ never wore in an NBA game. It still made its mark: Nike adapted it into baseball cleats for Jordan's spell in baseball, and other NBA players took to the court in exclusive versions. Today it is seen as one of the most refined Jordans of the 90s.

Design and tech: a Jordan made for the world

Hatfield conceived the Jordan 9 as a tribute to Michael Jordan's global reach. The outsole carries words in Japanese, Russian, German, Spanish, French and Swahili, each reflecting a value associated with the player. Speed lacing with special eyelets gives a precise fit in one pull, an inner bootie wraps the foot and Air cushioning sits in the midsole. Clean lines, a high-top cut and smooth leather or nubuck give the Jordan 9 a quieter, almost elegant look compared to its predecessors.
