NikeCraft x Tom Sachs General Purpose Shoe "Black Team Royal": Tom Sachs' everyday shoe goes black leather

New York artist Tom Sachs, known for his handmade sculptures and DIY space programme, has worked with Nike under the NikeCraft banner since the 2012 Mars Yard, a shoe designed with NASA engineers in mind. In 2022 came the General Purpose Shoe, his third shoe with the brand, built to be deliberately simple, worn every day and worn out. As Sachs put it, it took ten years to make a shoe as simple as can be and no simpler. Released on 30 September 2026 via SNKRS, this "Black Team Royal" pair has been nicknamed "Demerits" by the sneaker press, a name that suits the rule-driven world of the Tom Sachs studio, whose working code he laid out in his film Ten Bullets.

This edition is a real step up. The mesh and synthetics of earlier versions give way to a perforated black leather upper, paired with black pebbled leather on the toe, heel and lace panel, for more structure without losing the easy feel that makes the model so wearable. White Swooshes and heel pieces cut through the black, while Team Royal pull tabs on the tongue and heel echo the signature donning loops of the General Purpose. Classic laces and a sole in the Gum Dark Brown tone of the official Black/White-Team Royal-Team Orange-Gum Dark Brown colourway finish a shoe that, in Sachs' words, should look like a tool.
