Autry Medalist Low "Panda": all-leather black and white, 80s tennis style

Founded in Dallas, Texas, in 1982 by Jim Autry, the brand first kitted out tennis players, runners and aerobics fans. Its court model, the Medalist, was hailed by Tennis Magazine in 1985 as the best shoe on the market, and the small American flag stitched on the side became its signature. Revived in 2019 under Italian entrepreneur Alberto Raengo, Autry has kept that silhouette intact. The Medalist Low "Panda" is its most graphic take: a clean face-off between white and black.

No suede here: the upper is cut entirely from calf leather in two contrasting tones. White leads, while black traces the overlays and the heel tab, stamped with the Autry logo and matched to the rest of the shoe. A perforated toe keeps things breathable, and the padded collar and flat laces hold on to the original tennis look. The American flag on the side and a rubber sole finish off a sharply drawn two-tone trainer you can spot from across the street.

Black and white is the easiest pairing there is. The Medalist Panda works with baggy jeans and a white tee, black cargos and a workwear jacket, or pleated trousers and a striped shirt for smart casual done right. It goes through all four seasons in the same role: the trainer you grab every morning without thinking twice.

The panda colourway has become one of the most searched-for looks in sneakers in recent years.
