New Balance 992 Made in USA "Grey": the centenary runner that became a style icon

The 992 arrived in 2006, the year New Balance, founded in Boston in 1906, celebrated its 100th anniversary. It followed the 991 in the 99X line, which began with the 990 in 1982, and on debut it was the most expensive 99X model to make. Its fate changed when Steve Jobs started wearing it in 2007: the grey 992 joined jeans and a black turtleneck in his signature uniform. Discontinued around 2010, it returned in 2020 for its first-ever retro, led by the grey colourway, before being reworked by Kith, WTAPS, JJJJound and Joe Freshgoods.

The 992 Made in USA "Grey" stays true to the original recipe. The upper mixes suede, mesh and leather in tonal greys, with a padded collar for comfort. New Balance 992 branding is embroidered on the tongue, the big N sits on the side and USA is embroidered at the heel. Underfoot, the midsole combines ENCAP, a lightweight foam core wrapped in a supportive polyurethane rim, with ABZORB cushioning that soaks up impact at the heel and forefoot. A rubber outsole adds grip and durability.

Grey is New Balance's heritage colour, and that is exactly what makes these trainers so easy to wear. With raw denim and a crewneck sweatshirt, you get the minimalist look that made them famous. With wide wool trousers and a long coat, they add a sporty edge to a sharper fit. Unisex by design, they slot into any wardrobe.
