Nike Air Max Plus VII Triple Black: the TN7 returns

The story starts in 1998, when Nike designer Sean McDowell sketched a new runner on holiday in Florida, inspired by palm trees bending in the wind and sunsets melting into the horizon. Codenamed Sky Air, it became the Air Max Plus, better known as the TN after its Tuned Air cushioning. In 2005, Nike pushed the idea further with the Air Max Plus VII. Twenty years later, the TN7 is back, and the Nike Air Max Plus VII Triple Black lands right in the middle of the Y2K revival.

The big change is the upper. The original's swooping waves give way to dotted overlays, often likened to raindrops running down glass. Nike describes it as a nineties silhouette with a Y2K cyberspace feel. The mesh upper with synthetic leather accents is durable and breathable, with midfoot support for a locked-in fit. Underfoot, visible Max Air cushioning sits in a foam midsole above a rubber outsole. This colourway goes fully monochrome: black upper, tongue and soles, an anthracite TPU overlay on the toe box and a yellow and red Tuned Air logo on the tongue.

Styling all black Nike TN trainers couldn't be easier. Throw them on with a black tracksuit for the classic TN look, team them with cargos or baggy denim for a Y2K fit, or keep it relaxed with joggers and a hoodie. The tonal finish works far harder than a loud colourway, from daily wear to nights out. On sizing, most guides recommend going true to size with the TN, as the sturdy upper doesn't give much.

The TN has always had a cult following, and the TN7 adds a sharper, more futuristic edge to that legacy.
