Nike Moon Shoe OG "Anthracite": Nike's very first running shoe goes dark

It all started in Eugene, Oregon, in 1972. For the US Olympic Trials, track coach and Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman handmade a small run of shoes with a brand-new sole, cast in his wife's waffle iron. The tread recalled the footprints left on the Moon a few years earlier, and the Moon Shoe was born, along with the waffle sole that would become a cornerstone of Nike history.

After a comeback in late 2025 through a collaboration with Jacquemus, Nike has rolled the Moon Shoe OG out in further colourways. This pair, style code IX3952-002, wears the official Anthracite/Black-Anthracite-Safety Orange colourway. The textured nylon upper comes in a dark anthracite with a grey-green cast, joined by suede overlays and visible stitching. A black side Swoosh, black laces and a black rubber waffle sole keep everything moody, with one flash of colour: a small Safety Orange Swoosh on the tongue.

The low, slim profile taps straight into the retro running trainer trend. Wear them with wide canvas trousers, cuffed raw denim or vintage track pants, under a chore jacket or a nylon shell. Pick up the orange with a beanie or an accessory if you want to push it.

Plenty of brands are reissuing 1970s runners, but the Moon Shoe OG has a claim few can match: it is literally where Nike running began. An archive piece with a stripped-back design for anyone who cares about heritage.
