Every school has a rule that doesn't make much sense. For a young Tom Sachs, it was the dress code: all-black shoes, no exceptions. He showed up in soccer shoes instead. White Swoosh and all.
The story goes that he came close to being thrown out for it. His fix wasn't to change shoes. It was to take a marker and colour in the Swoosh until the shoe was, technically, black.
Rule followed. Point made. Demerits collected.
That moment is the starting point for the new NikeCraft x Tom Sachs General Purpose Shoe "Demerits" (FZ1363-002), releasing on September 30.
At first glance, "Demerits" is the most obedient GPS yet. A rugged black leather upper, the kind that would pass any dress code from across the room.
Then you look closer.
The Swooshes are white. Crisp, clean, and exactly what the young Sachs had to hide. Team Royal nylon herringbone pull-tabs sit at the heel and tongue, with small hits of Team Orange. The heel reads "Nike" in Sachs' own handwriting, embroidered rather than printed. And underneath it all, a gum sole that gives the black a little warmth.
It's a shoe that follows the rules just enough to get away with breaking them. Test the limits, take the penalty, wear it with pride.
To understand "Demerits", it helps to know where the GPS comes from.
Tom Sachs' work with Nike started with the Mars Yard in 2012, a shoe inspired by NASA engineers and built for the dusty test grounds where Mars rovers are developed. Over the next decade came the Mars Yard 2.0, the Overshoe, the Mars Yard 2.5 and, more recently, the Tom Sachs 3.0. Each one was wear-tested, broken, fixed and improved.
The General Purpose Shoe, introduced in 2022, is what came out of those ten years of research. Slimmer, simpler and less technical than the Mars Yard, it borrows from Nike classics like the Killshot and was designed for exactly what its name says: everyday use. No mission, no special function. Just a shoe you wear until it's worn out.
Sachs has always treated it as a tool rather than a trophy. It has even served as the "Loser Shoe", the consolation prize for participants who didn't make it through his I.S.R.U. space camp. A shoe that celebrates effort over winning. It makes sense that "Demerits" is the next chapter.
Like every GPS, "Demerits" is made for the long haul.
The upper is durable ECCO leather. The cup sole comes in three molded pieces: a rubber outsole, a soft gum midsole and an EVA foam core. The collar is lined in microfibre, and the herringbone donning straps make it easy to pull on at speed. Nothing on this shoe is decoration for the sake of it. Even the colour blocking tells a story.
It's the kind of sneaker that looks better after a few months of wear. Creased leather, scuffed gum, a slightly faded Swoosh. That's the point.
After a run of lighter GPS colourways, from the "Bricolage" earlier this year to the earthy Pecan/Dark Field Brown, "Demerits" is the one that goes with everything. Black leather, white Swoosh, gum sole: a combination that works with denim, workwear, tailoring or a school uniform, if you're feeling nostalgic.
It's also a reminder of what makes Tom Sachs' work with Nike so interesting. The products are never just products. There's always a story, a rule, a system behind them. Sometimes it's NASA. Sometimes it's a studio manual. This time, it's a kid with a marker pen and a problem with authority.
